Robert Hood – Motor: Nighttime World 3 3xLP + CD / CD – Music Man

Robert Hood finally releases the third part of his Nighttime World series, a trio of albums spanning 17 years. This time, he releases on the Music Man out of Belgium. He has over a dozen albums under his belt (under a variety of aliases) with influential labels like Tresor, Peacefrog and Logistic, in addition to his own M-Plant imprint. Not to mention his standout skills as a DJ, which have seen him touring internationally for two decades without missing a beat.

This album sees him creating techno in the original sense: a Detroit-centric, sleek, melodic, futuristic, funky vision of machine music. And with titles like “Motor City,” “Drive (The Age Of Automation),” “Torque One,” and “Assembly,” there can be no mistaking his motivation. But with songs like the introspective “Slow Motion Katrina” and optimistic “Better Life,” he infuses a clear view towards the idea of human potential.

All of this is perhaps reading too much into the titles and not enough into the music. The sounds move from fluid, jazz-influenced piano riffs to string-heavy broken beats to abstract downtempo to clockwork techno with whirring sound effects and tight punchy kicks. Throughout, Hood continues to be a creative force and to demonstrate through action that the techno aesthetic can be colourful, beautiful, and varied beyond the monotone of its contemporary associations.

This release is available as a 3xLP + CD set, or as a standalone CD.
