Area – Pop Art 12″ – Ethereal Sound

Full of gritty distortion and the buried fuzz of conversations and melodies, this EP is one for the listener and the discerning dance floor as well.

The opening cut “Pop Art” from the Chicago producer sets the tone of the EP with distorted conga rhythms driving the track while lulled out pads provide an eerie yet soothing melody. Not far from the sounds being created by other Chicago producers right now like Ike Release or Steven Tang this one is still all Area with its lean towards the ambient soundscapes and abstract sonic ideas always present in his work.

On the flip we are presented with some more crunchy, distorted yet deep excursions. In “Retroesque” we get a real low end workout where bits are crushed and compressors working overtime as the beats break up then reunite then dissolve again. The theme continues with “Metal Passenger”, however it is presented in more of a listening music style on this offering.

Well produced with lots of interesting dynamics and sounds while keeping the crunch under control, this is a great EP of music for a dark night out or in.
