Classics v3 12″ – Moods and Grooves

mg048Moods and Grooves is owned and operated by the Motor City’s Mike Grant. Grant has been DJing since the early 1980’s and along with Jeff Mills, Derrick May and many others, was a member of Detroit’s first radio mix show, WJLB’s Street Beat. Grant founded Moods and Grooves in 1999 and the label has since been a platform for the work of many respected artists. This 12″ is the third release in a series of retrospective compilations.

Side A showcases some straightforward feel-good vibes from Rotating Assembly member Andrés, his track “Just A Player” borrowed here was originally released on the 2004 compilation “Beneath The Surface.” Brad Peterson’s “Trickchords” leans more towards techno than the other tracks. Peterson has produced a couple of EPs on Moods and Grooves throughout the years and co-runs the Ediburgh based label Inner Shift Music with Rai Scott.

California’s John Tejada and collaborator Arian Leviste have released music together since 1997. The year 2000 saw the release of the original “Fashion Ave” on their EP “Where Circles Begin.” Tejada’s updated remix ditches a few elements, but keeps things fun with a flavor similar to the original’s. Closing things out is Demarkus Lewis’ remix of “New Stride,” reworking a track first released in 2005 on Aussie Ewan Jansen’s EP, “Blueline Summer.” Lewis (Grin Music) plays off of the original’s lighthearted summer vibe and centers his version around an airy yet persistent chord progression.
