Snad, Ignatius Camilo, The Deep Toddler, Tom Gillieron ‎– “Somewhere” on the HIGHway to Chapora 12″ – Gandu

CS598261-01A-BIGLocal wunderkind Snad launches his new imprint, Gandu, with a posse record. The first song is the most straightforward production ensemble, a collaboration between Snad and Ignatius Camilo; it’s a lush, proggy house tune with billowing chords & tribal drums, reminiscent of tech house’s Guidance & Paper records roots, complete with Chicago gospel-tinged vocals. On Banana Girl, Deep Toddler joins Ignatius and Snad in the studio for a similarly refined, if slightly more subdued version, incorporating flecks of trumpet, vibraphone, and guitar over a bed of  Swayzak-style swirling drone and bell melody.

Tom Gillieron’s mix on the flip is notably more insistent in its rolling distorted bassline and and straight-ahead beats, but it fits comfortably within the general theme, which seems to be one of digging into the adventurous origins of tech-house as a thoughtfully vibrant borderland rather than a safe middleground. Maybe the long and unruly title hints at the intricate, overflowing ambition of the productions themselves.
