Damon Bell – Blues For The Libyan 2xLP – Deepblak

CS572535-01A-BIGAybee’s often adventurous, consistently surprising imprint presents Damon Bell’s debut LP. One of the label’s most frequent contributors, the Bay area DJ & composer has been a member of the roster since Kush Musik, digitally released in 2009. In the intervening years Deepblak has followed his development across across 6 EPs.

On Blues For The Libyan, Bell collaborates with Khalil Anthony, Son Of Ororo, labelmate Afrikan Sciences, and even remixes himself as his own alter-ego D-Bo. It’s a rhythmically varied album, he moves easily between a downbeat, house-influenced feel on Kampala, Blood, and Striving To Be Who We Are, to the delicate ambience of Concrete Caravan and the frenetic tribal drums of Libyan Ether and Broken Feathers. But while he uses the album to stretch out with between styles and genres, the collection holds together with certain repeated melodic motifs, distinctive harmonies, and a cohesive textural palette.
