Aleksi Perala – Simulation 2xlp – Clone Basement Series

CBS024LPSince seemingly bursting onto the scene in 2015 with Clone’s release of The Colundi Sequence Volume 1, Aleksi Perala has been everywhere at once: remixed by Len Faki for the Berghain crowd, joining new-rave IDMers Bjarki and Roma Zuckerman on Nina Kraviz’ трип, and continuing with even more enthusiasm on his eponymous AP Musik outlet.

But Perala didn’t pop out of nowhere. He’s been building an immense catalog of distinctive works over many years, appearing in the 1990s on Richard D James’ Rephlex imprint under his Ovuca alias, and since then continuously recording under a variety of monikers, even including a collaborative album with Chris Jeffs (Cylob, Kinesthesia). Through all this, he’s explored ambient, abstract, breakbeat, and techno styles, with a recently lauded method-oriented approach.

This release is consistent with his recent higher-profile works, in that it’s often built in variations on a clear theme (the first side of the record is centered around a singular melodic motif), it incorporates his usual characteristic modal harmonics, and has cryptic serial-number tracknames to evade easy reference. But as far as points of reference go: check out NLL561606936 for a Kerrier District style disco bassline groove, NLL561606937 for Border Community dreamscape, or  NLL561606934 for some genuine Rephlex flavor.
