Chicago Skyway – Wreckage 2xLP – Eargasmic

From the sleek, immediately recognizable grey-on-black artwork and streamlined layout to the signature drier-than-dry tom work and straight ahead beats, Chicago Skyway completely owns his sound for this well-anticipated debut full-length package.

Moving purposefully from elegant melodies piano and bell melodies to heavily resonant acid lines and harsh cymbals, always stripped down and efficient for the dancefloor, it’s a release of many fully-realized ideas. Sound One seems to close out the B side and then reprise on the C side – I’m not sure if it’s intentional but it does allow for automatic doubles for the handy vinyl jockey, which is a plus since it’s one of a few shorter songs included.

For those wondering about the direction of a distinctive Chicago house sound in 2012, this release is clear evidence of recent current of artists connecting the dots between early techno / electro releases out of Detroit and Chicago via Sheffield bleepy warehouse sounds. File alongside fellow newschoolers Steven Tang, Hakim Murphy, Tevo Howard and John Heckle. Daryl Cura‘s Eargasmic imprint has been championing this balance and is a fine home for this doublepack.
