Ital – Dream On 2xLP – Planet Mu

With high-profile remixes for Falty DL and Peaking Lights and a forthcoming 12″ on the lauded Workshop records, Ital’s 2012 album Dream On bears revisiting. It was his second album for the recently footwork- and breakbeat-facinated Planet Mu, fitting in only insofar as it failed to fit in – oftentimes a hallmark of the A&R of Mike Paradinas’ iconoclastic imprint.

Prolific as a solo artist and collaborator, Daniel Martin-McCormick hass enjoyed an extended association with 100% Silk since helping launch the Californian imprint with the Ital’s Theme 12″ in 2011. Since then, he’s been involved in a several more releases from the label – both as a solo artist and as one half of Mi Ami.

Dream On is a divergence from the spastic and uptempo mode of recent Planet Mu, slowing things down to an earthier house-tempo. With a balanced approach to sound processing that frequently sounds simultaneously raw and processed, the results are reminiscent of modular work from Benjamin Brunn or Bass Clef. While the tempo and texture set these tracks apart from Planet Mu artists like Machinedrum, DJ Spinn and Chrissy Murderbot, it at the same time lacks the summery retro house restrained euphoria of 100% Silk’s Octo Octa, Bobby Browser, or Pharaohs. In that murky middle ground lies a short but captivating album.
