Chimp Beams – Journey To BK 12″ – Concent Productions

cpv1400Comprised of Mari Ayabe (Bass & Drum Tracks, Bass, Samples, Keys, Engineer, DJ), Yusuke Yamamoto (Vibraphone, Drums, Percussion, Flute, Trumpet, Bass, Keys, Engineer), and K-go Mizutani (Guitars, Effects, Noise) Chimp Beams are a live dub-jazz act based in Brooklyn, NY. In many ways their sound on record is very much an extension of the more dub’d out work by Ludovic Navarre in his St. Germain project.

For this EP we have the original version of “Journey To BK” followed up by a more thumping dub techno rework by Chicago’s own Area as well as a laid back ambient-esque reworking by Intrusion (aka Soultek, Radius, Variant). With the original, the trio takes a pretty classic dub beat framework with a heavy shuffle feel and tape delays working overtime. All of this foundation is laid while Yamamoto’s trumpet work carries the melody lines. On Area’s remix, he takes a similarly shuffled feel but adds some kick hits, some thud and an accompanying baseline making the track much more stylized for the dance floor. From there he layers on the textures utilizing elements from the original, however disguising them in layers of delay and reverb. For the last mix on the EP, Intrusion brings his dub stylings to create a beautiful serene chill-out track full of stereo delay elements and soft subtle percussion all the while using pieces of Yamamoto’s trumpet lines buried deep to provide a bit of spice to the mix.

This is a nice three track remix EP containing varying genres where there is really something there for many moods and situations.
