Takanawa Dream Hotel Vol. 1 12″ – MOSHItaka
This second release on Chicago’s MOSHItaka imprint hints that the label is drawing from a somewhat broader sonic range than could be foretold by their label-launching Doyeq 12″.
From the outset, Doubtingthomas diverges from the reverb-heavy dub-techno template with a dry but deep melodic tune; many-layered tuneful interplay between gentle pads, a revolving arpeggio of bells, and progressive piano chords give way to a trumpet lead and surreal vocals. Gavin Marks slows the tempo with a more reverberant track in much the same genre.
On the flip side, Russian luminary Anton Kubikov weighs in with Attake, leading with a big rubbery kick, precise soundscapes, and an elastic bassline. By contrast, Audub makes a first foray into physical media with the song Light Pattern; this is a more by-the-numbers single-chord dub techno tune, though well-executed.
Clearly, sound-design is a key consideration for the label; this compilation doesn’t diverge too wildly but shows a bit more of what the imprint is drawing from.
