Stefan Ringer – The Fix 12″ – NDATL Muzik

NDATLKai Alce’s NDATL Muzik seems to release in fits and spurts, but the quality shines through after a dozen records on the imprint. Here, Atlanta’s Stefan Ringer breaks new ground and gets deep and creative with the broken beat house sound.

In his first release for the imprint, Ringer opens with a title track harkening back to Domu and Nubian Mindz’ funky sampler jazz with sly portamento riffing keys dancing over a stumbling rhythm. Afua Richardson chimes in on IFY, with some spine-tingling harmonizing on a memorably sensual groove.

On the flip, Meagangood gets sassy with the “sexy sexy sexy” refrain over a quirky beat, slightly reminiscent of a few Tejada or Titonton joints. But this isnt’ a derivative work – as evidenced by Ringer seems to be able to dip in and out of styles: MYM channels Amp Fiddler with a slappy bassline and vocal interplay, Transitions closes with an original tune with more creative processing and a mean swing.

Though NDATL might be best known for its Music Institute 20th Anniversary series, releases like this show that it’s also simultaneously looking towards the future.
