Beau Wanzer – [untitled] LP – Beau Wanzer

CS551526-01A-BIGA late review for this late 2014 release is at least in part credit to an artist who has been remarkably prolific.  Beau maybe launches an eponymous imprint with a self-titled or untitled album, full-cover artwork with scant information and a dozen tracks… it’s a typically opaque approach for a Chicago-resident who has found himself increasingly in the spotlight after outings on L.I.E.S., Russian Torrent Versions, and in affiliation with Nation records.

The sounds on this release, though, seem to have more in common with the blurry meandering drum machine & delay electro grooves of Europe than with the aggressive acid-house & EBM revival hitting US shores of late. There are moments, though: the industrial-strength distortion on 23132 and I Don’t Even Want To will appeal to rivet traditionalists. For the most part, though, he’s happily used the release to stretch and showcase a range of styles within his unvarnished approach.
