Alex Barnett – Chew From The Mind LP – Midwich

MW006LPFollowers of the Midwich sound, and before that of Weekend Records & Soap, will be instantly familiar with the Chicago-via-Den Haag sound of distorted lo-fi drums, spooky synths, and a distinctively cheeky vision of dystopian electro. Alex Barnett’s first proper solo album delivers this aesthetic accurately, a few details notwithstanding…

For one, it’s not his first album. The Champagne Mirrors’ cassette from last year has been attributed to him, as have numerous full length projects under different alignments & names on Blackest Ever Black and Nihilist. A serial collaborator, each of his previous full-length releases have been recorded in tandem with producers like noise auteurs Panicsville, ambient / psych-rock cadet Ken Camden, and Mamifier’s multitalented Faith Coloccia.

Stepping out on his own, Barnett offers a dingy, varied, sparse style; always driven by rhythm, only occasionally incorporating a conspicuous melody. As always, with an engrossing cover image courtesy of illustrator Mark Salwowski.
